Spring into Good Health
A shift into spring weather and energy has begun. Days get longer, sunlight and warmth return. Some hot and some cold days start to give mixed signals to the body. According to Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine, our body senses these fluctuations in weather at a cellular level and begins a natural detox process. Just like animals living in nature slim down during spring by losing their winter fat, we too are elements of the same nature and need to tune in and recognize that our body wants us to do something different as the seasons come and go.
Spring is a time for rejuvenation, and doing a cleanse therefore becomes apparent. We often feel the need to get rid of old stuff and create a new space around this time. Our bodies are designed to eliminate toxins, but the sheer amount of toxins we encounter in modern day life are far too many, and we need to support our body to help rid them! Toxins today, can find their way into us through the air we breathe, food, preservatives, water, chemicals, gmo's, and pollution.
Here are some of my recommendations to help your body detoxify in spring . There is nothing you can compare to the feeling you get after detoxing. Practice these for at least ten days to feel the benefits. You may feel better energy, reduction in cravings, lose belly fat and reduce bloating. Your loved ones might even say 'you glow'! Your mood may improve and your mind more focused and clear.
1) Eat whole, real foods - Eliminate foods that come in a can or box as a first step. Stick to lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, beans and greens. Include dark leafy greens like kale, swiss chard and collard greens. The chlorophyll in these feed your blood, bind with toxins and remove them from the body. Eat springtime vegetables like dandelion greens, spinach, parsley,asparagus, fennel and mustard greens.
2) Lemon in warm water - is one of the best ways to get those digestive juices flowing and promote good digestion and detoxification. Regularly sipping on a glass of warm water with some lemon squeezed can help shed some pounds. Pectin, a fiber found in lemons helps you feel fuller for longer. The antioxidants in lemon water fight damage caused by free radicals keeping your skin look fresh. It also helps boost your energy and mood. You can replace lemon with a drop of Doterra Lemon essential oil for a quicker lemon water routine.
3) Juicing - I love to juice even more during the seasonal changes. So, why juice when you can chew and eat all these yummy veggies and fruits? Juicing is a great way to reset the body and give your digestive system a well deserved break it needs to let go off toxins. You don't have to necessarily do a juice fast. Replacing juice for your morning breakfast or drinking in between meals can contribute in a big way. When we juice we basically extract the water from the fruits and veggies and drink it up. It does deprive us temporarily from the good fiber in it, but has life enhancing health benefits like a faster and more efficient way to absorb immune boosting nutrients found naturally in fruits and vegetables. Since your body is getting rid of toxins, juicing is a great way to replenish your body with all the nutrients it needs.
4) Skin Detoxing - Our skin is our biggest organ for elimination and here are some things we can do to encourage the outward flow of toxins. Epsom Salt Baths - a wonderful way to detoxify and relax at the end of your day. The heat opens up pores and the water pulls out toxins. Try our very own NEEV Bath Salt made with epsom salt, all natural essential oils and dried lavender for a relaxing calming bath. Dry Brushing - one of my favorite ways to detox daily. Dry Brushing is different from using an exfoliate in the shower. It targets the lymphatic system which does not have a pump. Manually massaging the skin toward the heart and direction of lymph nodes helps the lymph move vigorously increasing the body's detoxification rate.
Although more intense cleanses and detoxification regimes do exist, incorporating with warm teas, whole foods, juicing, and skin detoxifying in moderation gives the body a more natural, gentler cleanse safe for almost everyone.
